Life After Pi

After the VFX protest, this documentary was shot. This is Life After Pi, a short documentary about Rhythm & Hues Studios. The film shows a bit how the VFX business works and the bad moment the company faced until the end. It's heartbreaking to see how much they have accomplished and how little they have "earned" out of that. A business run like Hollywood wants it to be, doesn't work. The studios give support, but the work isn't done by them and VFX is the main part of most of the videos nowadays. An eye opener.

Smaug - The creation

Thank you, Weta Digital. A thousand times. A million times. THIS is what I like, THIS is what you aim when making 3d. Create something out of nothing and make it real, believable. It's an amazing piece of work and these guys deserve all the credits!

Curiosity sees Earth

Curiosity has been strolling around planet Mars since 2012 to study the red planet. Sometimes he takes some selfies (these younglings...) and other pictures to give us some insight of how small we are in this world.

See that dot over there? Well, it's kinda hard to spot it, so the guys at NASA made it somewhat easy to tell by doing this:

That tiny dot is the Earth.

It really makes me feel quite small... The researchers used the left eye camera of the rover's Mast Camera to capture the image, 80 minutes after sunset of his 529th Martian day (Jan. 31, 2014 to us, mortals) and then processed to remove the effects of cosmic rays. Earth and the Moon look like two bright evening stars, if it were a human observer there. Oh, and they are 160 million kilometres away from Mars.

The Winter Olympics

Sochi. At this point, these Winter Olympics are the Winter Lolz of the world. An impressive budget, delays in construction, the stray dogs issue and... the homophobic laws. As the world moves forward, seeing these kind of laws and attitude towards the LGBT community is disgusting ans so last... century? Google made a statement today, celebrating the Winter Games and equality:

The Canadian Institute of Diversity released this hilarious ad:

And channel 4 rebranded its logo to show support to ALL athletes.

And today they released an advert. Please, just watch...

Equality. Respect. Rather than pretend that the issue is not there, call it out!

The Walking Conan

Keep it real!

Unrealistic beauty. The debate of whether or not Photoshop should be used. The tool that enables us to hide some imperfections, or change our looks completely.

This video is from 2006. At the time, I was taking my degree. This video showcased a problem I didn't realize that existed... I thought that the photos weren't retouched to this extent. Now, at least for me, it's easier to spot the imperfect perfections. Pores that don't exist, impossible limb positions... No wonder women get so messed up with their body image! Dove tackled that industry standard by starting the "Real Beauty" campaign. Slowly, others followed. The lingerie brand Aerie

Thor: The Dark World - Full Gag Reel

Skyrim. In VR.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an enormous, immersive world as it is. Play it with a big screen and you think that you are really inside the action. But couple it with something more than a screen and it takes gaming to another level...

Not just controlling the Dovahkiin. Being the Dovahkiin. This is the Cyberith Visualizer. It's an omnidirectional treadmill that works as a game controller. There's a Oculus Rift for visualization and Wii Mote for the rest of the controls. I can't imagine how great this is to play the game like this... But I think it would be awesome!

New still from Transformers 4!

A new still was released today from the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction movie, as well as a teaser video.

Whaaaa...? As a fan of Transformers since I can remember, and even liking all three last movies that Michael Bay gave the world... the hell is this? Dinobots? Huh? It's a teaser and deprived of context, of course, but even so... It's... odd? Weird? A bucket of wtf? I guess we have to wait to see more...

Maleficent

Sleeping beauty never was one of those Disney movies that I liked the most. I was more into The Lion King or Cinderella. Although, being the classic that it is, it's a joy to see. And Maleficent is one of the most terrifying villains of all Disney stories. When this movie was announced, I really liked the whole concept. Angelina Jolie cast as Maleficent is a must... The shots revealed that she was more than perfect for the role, as far as looks are concerned.

Of course the movie is packed with CGI and, if the final result is not goofy (like John Carter) we may have a great film. Jolie is devilishly mean and sarcastic as the witch she portrays and I'm really excited to see the movie! Enjoy the "Dream" trailer for Maleficent!
